The room
The Kaiserkeller is a music club in the St. Pauli district of Hamburg, in the basement of the Große Freiheit 36 club. Bruno Koschmider, a variety performer and publican, opened it in October 1959 with room for 700 people, and it was the first club in Germany to put live rock music on stage as a regular booking, starting with The Jets from London. Allan Williams sent bands over from Liverpool, so Rory Storm & the Hurricanes, Derry Wilkie & the Seniors and the Beatles all played the room in its early years.
