The room
The Calabash — a 94,736-seat bowl at Nasrec on the edge of Soweto, named for its resemblance to an African cooking pot. Opened in October 1989 and rebuilt between 2007 and 2009 for the World Cup, it hosted the 2010 final and, before that, Nelson Mandela's first Johannesburg speech after his release in 1990 and his memorial in 2013. As a concert venue it works at the scale few African stadiums do: U2 drew 94,232 here, Ed Sheeran 135,000 across his run.
