The room

A heritage-listed 1,520-seat theatre on Hunter Street in Newcastle, New South Wales, and the city's oldest surviving theatre. It was opened in 1929 by the state premier Thomas Bavin and designed by the theatre architect Henry Eli White, with a Georgian Revival exterior and a Spanish Baroque interior featuring a marble staircase, a grand ornamental ceiling dome and deep recessed arches over the boxes flanking the stage. Used for decades only as a cinema, it now programmes musicals, plays, concerts and dance, and with Newcastle City Hall it is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register as the Newcastle City Hall and Civic Theatre Precinct.
