Cape Town City Hall

An Edwardian public hall on the Grand Parade in central Cape Town, west of the Castle, built in 1905 from honey-coloured oolitic limestone imported from Bath in England to a competition-winning design by Harry Austin Reid and Frederick George Green. Its organ, built by Norman and Beard of London and Norwich, has 3,165 pipes, and its carillon was installed as a First World War memorial with 22 further bells added in 1925. Nelson Mandela made his first public speech from the balcony on 11 February 1990, hours after his release from prison, and a statue of him was unveiled on that spot on 24 July 2018. The building no longer houses the city's offices; it is now the main venue for the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra's symphony concerts and a regular home for concerts and exhibitions.
