The room

A hidden Wesleyan chapel above Manchester's streets, derelict for decades until 2013 — its stained glass and organ now overlook one of Britain's most magical gig rooms.

Frequently Googled

What is the capacity of Albert Hall Manchester?

1,900 across both floors for gigs, and 2,200 for club nights. It is mostly a standing room, though some shows are seated — your ticket and booking confirmation say which one you are at.

What is the bag policy at Albert Hall Manchester?

One small bag per person, no bigger than an A4 sheet (21 x 30 x 19 cm), and every bag is searched on the door. The cloakroom on the basement level takes A4-sized bags and coats, by card or exact change. Anything larger has to go elsewhere: the venue points people at Bounce by the Castlefield Hotel, about six minutes' walk, or LuggageHero at Piccadilly Gardens, about sixteen.

What is the age limit at Albert Hall Manchester?

Club nights and Bongo's Bingo are 18+. Gigs vary and are typically 14+, but the event page is the authority. Be careful with this one: someone under the age limit is refused entry even with a guardian, and there is no refund.

Is there a dress code at Albert Hall Manchester?

Nothing strict — with one Manchester-shaped exception. No football shirts, unless the event is itself a football screening. Security may also ask you to take off a hat or sunglasses.

Why does Albert Hall Manchester look like a church?

Because it was one. It opened in 1910 as a Wesleyan chapel for the Manchester and Salford Wesleyan Mission, designed by the Bradford architect William James Morley in a mix of Gothic and Baroque, clad in Burmantofts terracotta with stained glass, a horseshoe gallery and an ornate organ case. It is Grade II listed, and the Main Hall you stand in is the chapel.

How long was Albert Hall Manchester closed?

Over forty years. The Methodist Church shut it in July 1969 and the Main Hall was left untouched above a used car showroom and later Brannigan's nightclub. Surveyors rediscovered it in 2011 — stained glass, layered seating and a working organ still in place — and it reopened as a venue in 2013 with Manchester International Festival shows, Mogwai playing their Zidane score among the first.

Is there a lift at Albert Hall Manchester?

Yes — a locked lift kept for accessibility customers, with a 630 kg capacity, and the accessibility team will get you to it. There is an accessible toilet on the balcony level that takes a RADAR key, and staff can let you in if you do not have one. There is no accessible parking on site. The accessibility line is 0161 817 3490, staffed 10:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday.

Can I take photos at Albert Hall Manchester?

Smartphones are fine; professional cameras and recording equipment are not, and the people you see with the big lenses at the front are accredited. Some artists ban phone photography outright, and when that happens there are signs up around the venue.
