Why does Albert Hall Manchester look like a church?
Because it was one. It opened in 1910 as a Wesleyan chapel for the Manchester and Salford Wesleyan Mission, designed by the Bradford architect William James Morley in a mix of Gothic and Baroque, clad in Burmantofts terracotta with stained glass, a horseshoe gallery and an ornate organ case. It is Grade II listed, and the Main Hall you stand in is the chapel.
How long was Albert Hall Manchester closed?
Over forty years. The Methodist Church shut it in July 1969 and the Main Hall was left untouched above a used car showroom and later Brannigan's nightclub. Surveyors rediscovered it in 2011 — stained glass, layered seating and a working organ still in place — and it reopened as a venue in 2013 with Manchester International Festival shows, Mogwai playing their Zidane score among the first.
Is there a lift at Albert Hall Manchester?
Yes — a locked lift kept for accessibility customers, with a 630 kg capacity, and the accessibility team will get you to it. There is an accessible toilet on the balcony level that takes a RADAR key, and staff can let you in if you do not have one. There is no accessible parking on site. The accessibility line is 0161 817 3490, staffed 10:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday.
