The room

The 9:30 Club is a nightclub and concert venue at 815 V Street NW, anchoring the eastern end of Washington DC's U Street Corridor. It opened on 31 May 1980 around the corner from Ford's Theatre at 930 F Street NW — the address that gave it both its name and its original 9.30pm start time — and moved to the larger V Street room on 5 January 1996, opening to the public with a show that included the Smashing Pumpkins. A distinctive wheeled stage on rails can be rolled forward so that a 500-person night feels as packed as a sold-out 1,200-person show. Pollstar has named it Nightclub of the Year thirteen times, more than any club in that award's history, and Bob Dylan played it unannounced in April 2004 ahead of scheduled dates at Bender Arena and the Warner Theatre.

Frequently Googled

What are the 9:30 Club box office hours?

The 9:30 Club box office is open weekdays 12:00pm–7:00pm, stretching to 11:00pm on show nights. On weekends it only opens when there is a show — from 6pm or an hour before doors — closing 11pm Saturdays and 10:30pm Sundays (shut on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). Best part: no service fees when you buy at the window, though VIP packages are online-only via Ticketmaster.

How old do you have to be to get into the 9:30 Club?

Any age. Unless a particular show says otherwise, the club is all ages, all the time. Drinking is the strict bit: DC law means anyone 21 or over who wants a drink must show a physical, valid, in-date government photo ID, and without one you are treated as under 21 no matter how old you look.

Does the 9:30 Club have seats?

Almost never. Unless a show is advertised as seated — which is rare — everything is general admission and standing. There are a few bar stools on the balcony on a first-come, first-served basis. If you need a seat, call the box office on 202-265-0930 before the show and they will make arrangements.

Where do you park at the 9:30 Club?

The club runs its own monitored lot at 2366 9th St NW, about 0.3 miles away — a six-minute walk. It opens an hour before general-admission doors, costs $20 booked online in advance or $25 at the gate on the night, and it is card only, no cash. Book online and your name is with the attendant at the gate.

Which Metro station is closest to the 9:30 Club?

U Street / African American Civil War Memorial / Cardozo on the Green Line, two blocks away. Take the 10th Street exit — it is the one that leaves you nearest the club.

Can you pay cash at the 9:30 Club?

Not at the bars, the coffee bar, the Food Food stand or the merch table — those take cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. If you are carrying cash, the merch stand will swap it for an I.M.P. gift card you can spend anywhere inside. The box office does take all the major credit and debit cards, and adds no service fee.

Why is it called the 9:30 Club?

After its first address. The club opened in 1980 in the Atlantic Building at 930 F Street NW — a 200-capacity room with pillars in front of the stage, famous for its rats and its smell, where Nirvana, R.E.M., Fugazi, Bad Brains, Public Enemy, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Black Flag all played early. It moved to 815 V Street NW in January 1996, into the old WUST gospel radio building that had been Duke Ellington's club decades before, and opened it with two sold-out Smashing Pumpkins nights.

Can I take a bag or a camera into the 9:30 Club?

The club would rather you left the bag at home; bring one and it will be searched, and you may be asked to check it depending on size. Coat check is seasonal, $5 an item. Cameras are the band's call and the policy changes night to night, so come prepared to hand yours in. Signs and banners have to be smaller than 8.5 by 11 inches, and selfie sticks, tripods, laser pointers and noise makers are refused outright.

Can you queue overnight at the 9:30 Club?

No — the club strongly discourages camping out and reserves the right to turn away anyone who has. It asks that lines do not start before 10am, and points out that standing outside all day tends to end with people too wrecked to enjoy the gig. If you want the front rail or the balcony rail, be in line before doors; there is no guarantee of a spot however early you arrive.
