A performing-arts complex in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, built around Raleigh Memorial Auditorium — a 2,277-seat Neoclassical and Beaux-Arts hall that opened on 14 August 1932 as a memorial to the military personnel who died in the First World War. It stands at the southern end of Fayetteville Street, deliberately designed to answer the North Carolina State Capitol at the street's northern end. In 2001 the auditorium was absorbed into a larger complex, designed by Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee, that flanks it with the Meymandi Concert Hall and the A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater; the centre was known first as the Progress Energy Center and then the Duke Energy Center before taking its present name. Four resident companies use it: Carolina Ballet, North Carolina Opera, the North Carolina Symphony and PineCone. The Machine is a rock act.
