Manchester Academy is four concert rooms on the University of Manchester campus, run by the Students' Union: Academy 1 holds 2,600, Academy 2 950, Club Academy 650 and Academy 3 470. They are housed in two buildings — the original 1957 Students' Union, which began hosting concerts in 1963 with Humphrey Lyttelton and His Band, and the purpose-built Academy that opened in October 1990. The rooms took the Academy name in 2004 after the universities merged; unlike the other UK venues called Academy, this one is not run by the Academy Music Group. The Fray are an American rock band from Denver, formed in 2002 by schoolmates Isaac Slade and Joe King.
