A West End theatre on Panton Street, opened on 15 October 1881 as the Royal Comedy Theatre and known simply as the Comedy Theatre until it was renamed for Harold Pinter in 2011. Thomas Verity designed it and it went up in six months in stucco and brick; a major reconstruction in the mid-1950s left the 1881 auditorium and its three horseshoe tiers essentially intact. The Cherry Orchard was Anton Chekhov's last play, written in 1903 and first staged at the Moscow Art Theatre in January 1904 under Konstantin Stanislavski.
