A lavish performing-arts palace at 2211 Woodward Avenue in Downtown Detroit, opened in 1928 as a flagship of the Fox Theatres chain and designed by architect C. Howard Crane. With 5,048 seats it is the largest surviving 1920s movie palace, a National Historic Landmark that lends its name to the surrounding Foxtown district and now hosts major concerts and shows. Stevland Hardaway Morris, known as Stevie Wonder, was born on 13 May 1950 and is one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century, claimed as a forerunner across R&B, pop, soul, gospel, funk and jazz.
