A medieval castle and Victorian Gothic Revival mansion in the centre of Cardiff, used for outdoor concerts. The original motte-and-bailey was raised in the late 11th century by Norman invaders on top of a 3rd-century Roman fort, and rebuilding in stone — a shell keep and substantial defensive walls — began in the 12th century. Richard Ashcroft is the Wigan-born voice of The Verve, whose Bitter Sweet Symphony and The Drugs Don't Work remain Britpop's most soaring moments.
