Melkweg (Dutch for 'Milky Way') is a nonprofit music and cultural centre near Leidseplein in Amsterdam. It opened in July 1970 in a former dairy building and became a year-round operation in 1973. The complex holds several performance spaces — including The Max (capacity around 1,500) and the Rabo Hall (around 1,400) — plus halls, a cinema and exhibition space, staging live music, film, theatre and exhibitions. U2 played their first concert outside Ireland and the UK here in 1980, and Nirvana performed in 1989. Pub Choir is an Australian mass-singing event founded in Brisbane in 2017 by conductor Astrid Jorgensen, in which a live audience of untrained singers is taught a popular song in three-part harmony and performs it together.
