The National is a live-music and performing-arts venue on East Broad Street in Richmond, Virginia, housed in a 1923 theatre that once screened films as well as staging shows. After years as the Towne Theater cinema it was restored and reopened as The National in 2008, and is the last survivor of Broad Street's original trio of grand auditoriums. Pavement are the Stockton, California band whose wry, shambling Slanted and Enchanted and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain made them the defining indie-rock band of the 90s.
