The Mother Church of Country Music: an 1892 gospel tabernacle whose pews and legendary acoustics hosted the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974. Playing the Ryman — and stepping into its circle of worn wood — is country music's holiest rite. Pavement are the Stockton, California band whose wry, shambling Slanted and Enchanted and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain made them the defining indie-rock band of the 90s.
