A West End theatre on the Strand, designed by C. J. Phipps for Richard D'Oyly Carte and opened on 10 October 1881, on ground once occupied by the Savoy Palace. It was built for one purpose — to stage the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas, which took the building's name and have been the Savoy operas ever since. Paddington: The Musical has music and lyrics by Tom Fletcher and a book by Jessica Swale, drawing on Michael Bond's 1958 children's book A Bear Called Paddington and the 2014 film.

Why is the Savoy Theatre famous?
Because it was the first public building in the world to be lit by incandescent electric light. Richard D'Oyly Carte built it so that he would have his own house for Gilbert and Sullivan, and it opened on 10 October 1881 with Patience transferring in from the Opera Comique — decorated by Collinson & Locke and billed at the time as the most beautifully fitted theatre in Europe.

Is the Savoy Theatre wheelchair accessible?
In one part of it. The level-access route is into the Dress Circle from Carting Lane, round the side of the building — arrive no earlier than half an hour before the show and have someone tell Stage Door, which is on the same street. The theatre seats one wheelchair user with a companion, or two wheelchair users without companions, at each performance. There is no lift anywhere in the building: the Stalls are 75 steps down from the foyer and the Dress Circle 32.

Four — Stalls, Dress, Mezzanine and Grand Circle. None of them has level access, but the staff will bring drinks down to your seat if you ask. There are toilets on every level, the accessible ones are on the Dress Circle, and the whole theatre is air conditioned.
