The Pavilion Theatre and Ballroom is a concert hall in Bournemouth, opened by the Duke of Gloucester on 19 March 1929 after forty years of argument — local residents had repeatedly blocked plans for a licensed venue in the gardens. It was designed by G Wyville Home and Shirley Knight, winners of a 1923 competition chaired by Edwin Cooper, and cost £250,000. Rebuilt in the early 1930s to take theatrical productions as well as orchestras, it reopened in July 1934 and was listed Grade II in January 1998. It is owned by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, managed by BH Live, and works alongside its sister venue the Bournemouth International Centre. Jonathan Pie is not a person but a character: a fictional political correspondent played by the English comedian Tom Walker.
