An outdoor amphitheatre in Independence Township, Michigan, about 40 miles north-west of Detroit and named for the nearby Pine Knob ski area. Built by the Nederlander Organization and designed by Neumann/Smith, it opened on 25 June 1972 with a matinee by David Cassidy and was then the largest amphitheatre in the United States at 12,500 capacity; lawn expansion in the early 1980s took it past 15,000. It ranks among the top-selling outdoor concert venues in the world, was the DTE Energy Music Theatre for two decades from 2001, and is programmed by 313 Presents. Jack White is the Detroit garage-rock auteur who led The White Stripes to Seven Nation Army immortality, founded Third Man Records and keeps reinventing the guitar across solo albums.
