Melkweg (Dutch for 'Milky Way') is a nonprofit music and cultural centre near Leidseplein in Amsterdam. It opened in July 1970 in a former dairy building and became a year-round operation in 1973. The complex holds several performance spaces — including The Max (capacity around 1,500) and the Rabo Hall (around 1,400) — plus halls, a cinema and exhibition space, staging live music, film, theatre and exhibitions. U2 played their first concert outside Ireland and the UK here in 1980, and Nirvana performed in 1989. HorsegiirL is a German DJ, singer and songwriter who performs in a horse-head mask, playing a hyperpop-inflected strain of club music around a fully committed equine persona.
