Raleigh's large outdoor amphitheater, originally Walnut Creek Amphitheatre, set on a 77-acre complex on the west bank of Walnut Creek. Built for $13.5 million, it opened on July 4, 1991 with the Connells. Seating runs to about 6,847 under and open cover, with lawn room for another 13,653. Live Nation operates it for big-name concerts. Empire of the Sun is Luke Steele (once of The Sleepy Jackson) and Nick Littlemore (of PNAU), who met in Sydney and in 2008 released Walking on a Dream, the record whose title track became one of the most-played Australian songs of its era.
