Manchester Academy is four concert rooms on the University of Manchester campus, run by the Students' Union: Academy 1 holds 2,600, Academy 2 950, Club Academy 650 and Academy 3 470. They are housed in two buildings — the original 1957 Students' Union, which began hosting concerts in 1963 with Humphrey Lyttelton and His Band, and the purpose-built Academy that opened in October 1990. The rooms took the Academy name in 2004 after the universities merged; unlike the other UK venues called Academy, this one is not run by the Academy Music Group. Don Broco are an English rock band from Bedford, formed in 2008 by schoolfriends who played their first gigs at Bedford Modern School but only committed to the band after studying at Nottingham University.
