Raleigh's large outdoor amphitheater, originally Walnut Creek Amphitheatre, set on a 77-acre complex on the west bank of Walnut Creek. Built for $13.5 million, it opened on July 4, 1991 with the Connells. Seating runs to about 6,847 under and open cover, with lawn room for another 13,653. Live Nation operates it for big-name concerts. Death Cab for Cutie are a Bellingham, Washington indie-rock band led by Ben Gibbard, whose Transatlanticism and Plans became the emotional bedrock of 2000s indie.
