Widespread Panic are an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1986, fronted by singer and guitarist John Bell. Their sound folds Southern rock, blues, hard rock and jazz-tinged improvisation into long, freewheeling jams, an approach that has drawn frequent comparison to the Grateful Dead and Phish. Studio records such as Space Wrangler and Ball anchor a catalogue built to stretch out on stage. Touring is where the band truly lives: they hold the record for the most sold-out performances at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and a 1998 album release party in their home state reportedly drew a crowd in the tens of thousands. Widespread Panic remain among the most durable and devoted jam-band draws in the country.
