About

The Washington National Opera was founded in 1956 as the Opera Society of Washington, by Day Thorpe, then music critic of the Washington Star, together with Paul Callaway. It was renamed the Washington Opera in 1977 and designated by Congress as the national opera company in 2000. From 1971 to 2025 its performances were given in the opera house of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Opera in the city long predates the company: a Washington National Opera Association had flourished after the First World War, staging performances in outdoor venues into the 1960s.
