Umzulu Phaqa is an isiZulu singer-songwriter out of KwaZulu-Natal whose live show pulls together the spirit of Brenda Fassie, eighties bubblegum synths, funk-heavy basslines and a vocal style that refuses to stay in one place. An Apple Music Up Next pick, she followed her debut album Volume 1 with a run that took her from the Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival to the Rose Festival. At Untitled Basement she has long been a familiar face — sometimes stepping in as a guest, sometimes turning up to support another artist — and when she headlines she brings a full band, with KG Nova on guitar and Simz Jazzinmotion on drums.
