About
Tony Christie is an English singer, born Anthony Fitzgerald in 1943. His grandfather came from Hollymount in County Mayo, was a coal-miner in Conisbrough and played the squeezebox, his Galway grandmother played fiddle, and his father, an accountant at the Conisbrough mine, played piano at home, where Tony first sang as a boy. He took his stage name after seeing the 1965 film Darling. Discovered and managed by Harvey Lisberg, he worked in a Sheffield accounts office by day and sang in northern working men's clubs at night, and in 1966 formed Tony Christie and the Trackers with Jimmy Page on guitar. "Las Vegas", "I Did What I Did for Maria" and "Avenues and Alleyways" followed in the early 1970s.
