About

The Toasters are one of the original American third-wave ska bands, founded in New York City in 1981 and responsible for nine studio albums, most of them on Moon Ska Records. The Englishman Robert Hingley had moved to New York in 1980 to manage the city's Forbidden Planet comic shop, and started the band after seeing the Beat at the Roseland Ballroom; the early line-up was largely other people from the shop. Their first show was supporting Bad Brains at A7. They self-released the single "Beat Up" in 1983, and when no label would put out their Joe Jackson-produced EP Recriminations, Hingley founded Moon Ska to do it himself. Skaboom! followed in 1987. Hingley is the band's only constant member.
