The Space Lady is the performing name of Susan Dietrich Schneider, an American musician born in 1948 in Pueblo, Colorado, and a celebrated figure in outsider and 'space' music. She began as a street performer in Boston and San Francisco in the 1980s and 1990s, adopting a winged silver helmet and a Casiotone MT-40 keyboard around 1983 and busking for years in San Francisco's Castro and Haight-Ashbury districts. After retiring in 2000 to work in nursing, she returned to music in 2012, and the 2013 compilation The Space Lady's Greatest Hits brought wider attention, later featuring on The Guardian's list of the strangest records on Spotify. Her first world tour began in 2014, and she is known live for ethereal vocals and her unmistakable illuminated helmet.
