The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band formed in Chicago in 1988 by Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'arcy Wretzky and Jimmy Chamberlin. Their sound folds heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelia and shoegaze into densely layered rock. Siamese Dream (1993) delivered their commercial breakthrough, and the 1995 double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness debuted at number one and produced 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings,' '1979' and 'Tonight, Tonight.' The band has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. Reunited around Corgan, Iha and Chamberlin since 2006, they remain a major touring draw known for ambitious, marathon-length sets.
