The Pogues are an English Celtic punk band formed in King's Cross, London, in 1982 by Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy and Jem Finer. Originally called Pogue Mahone, they fused Irish traditional music with the energy and attitude of punk. Across albums including Rum Sodomy & the Lash (1985) and If I Should Fall from Grace with God (1988) they became one of the defining bands of the folk-punk movement. Their 1987 duet with Kirsty MacColl, "Fairytale of New York", reached number two in the UK and remains a perennial Christmas favourite. Built on rowdy London pub gigs and MacGowan's ragged charisma, the Pogues earned a reputation for riotous live shows; after dissolving in 2014, surviving members reformed in 2024 with guest vocalists.
