About
Les pêcheurs de perles, in English The Pearl Fishers, is an opera in three acts by Georges Bizet to a libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré. It was premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris on 30 September 1863 and given eighteen performances in that first run. Set in ancient times on the island of Ceylon, it turns on two men whose vow of eternal friendship is threatened by their love for the same woman, and on her own conflict between secular love and a sacred oath as a priestess. The friendship duet "Au fond du temple saint" is among the best-known numbers in the repertoire.
