About

The Brother Moves On is a South African performance art ensemble based in Johannesburg, founded some time between 2008 and 2010 by the artist Nkululeko Mthembu and his brother Siyabonga, and named after the two of them misheard Brother Mouzone, the enforcer in The Wire. It began as a loose art collective of graphic and performance artists and is now most widely recognised as a band, fronted by Siyabonga Mthembu with Zelizwe Mthembu on lead guitar, Ayanda Zalekile on bass and Simphiwe Tshabalala on drums, joined by a shifting cohort of collaborators. Their multi-disciplinary live shows have been described as "tradition-trouncing trans-Atlantic Afro-centric futuristically ancient fusion". The first EP, The Golden Wake, stages a funeral for a character called Mr. Gold.
