About
The Afghan Whigs formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1986 around Greg Dulli on vocals and rhythm guitar, Rick McCollum on lead guitar and John Curley on bass. They rose up around the grunge movement, evolving from a garage band in the vein of the Replacements to pull R&B and soul into both the sound and the image. Their first album was released independently in 1988; they signed to Sub Pop, and Gentlemen, their major label debut on Elektra Records, arrived in 1993 — Pitchfork later called them one of the few alt-bands to flourish on a major label in that decade. Dulli said in interviews that they would never get back together. They reunited in 2012.
