About
Test Dept are a British industrial group formed in New Cross, London, in 1981, and counted among the most influential early acts in the genre. Founding members included Graham Cunnington, Paul Jamrozy and Angus Farquhar, with comedian Vic Reeves briefly playing bass in an early line-up. Building instruments from scrap metal and industrial machinery, they married pounding percussion with sound-collage and overt political engagement; their 1985 release Shoulder to Shoulder was recorded with the South Wales Striking Miners' Choir, and 1986's The Unacceptable Face of Freedom drew wide praise. The group disbanded in 1997 and reformed in 2016 as Test Dept: Redux. Renowned for large-scale, site-specific performances in railway stations and historic locations, they remain celebrated for their thunderous, film-flanked live spectacle.
