Steven Arthur Pinker, born on 18 September 1954, is a Canadian cognitive psychologist, psycholinguist and popular science author, and the Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology at Harvard University. He advocates evolutionary psychology and the computational theory of mind, and specialises in visual cognition and developmental linguistics; his technical work with Alan Prince argues that children apply default rules, sometimes wrongly, and must learn irregular forms one at a time. He has written nine books for general readers, among them The Language Instinct, How the Mind Works, Words and Rules and The Blank Slate.
