Steve Earle is an American singer-songwriter born in 1955 at Fort Monroe, Virginia, and raised around San Antonio, Texas. Ranging across alternative and outlaw country, country rock and contemporary folk, he broke through with 1986's Guitar Town and reached a wider audience with 1988's Copperhead Road. A restless, socially engaged writer whose songs tackle capital punishment, war and politics, he has won three Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Folk Album, including for the 2009 Townes Van Zandt tribute Townes. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020 and joined the Grand Ole Opry in 2025. Also an actor and author, Earle remains a tireless touring performer.
