Ramon Alexander

Ramon Alexander is a pianist, composer, bandleader and educator, and one of the leading voices in contemporary Cape Jazz. He began with jazz piano lessons from Merton Barrow at Cape Town's Jazz Workshop, and after graduating from Stellenbosch University with a degree in viticulture and oenology he chose music over winemaking. He has performed and recorded with Robbie Jansen, Errol Dyers, McCoy Mrubata, Ibrahim Khalil Shihab, Khaya Mahlangu, Terumasa Hino, Frank Paco and Dizu Plaatjies, and with the Cape Jazz Band led by Jack Momple, playing the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and jazz festivals in Malaysia and Borneo. Two albums carry his own name, Picnic at Kontiki and Echoes from Louwskloof, and he features on Cape Jazz Piano. He heads the jazz division at Stellenbosch University.
