About
Phil Beer, born on 12 May 1953, is an English multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, and one half of the acoustic roots duo Show of Hands. He began on fiddle, guitar and mandolin while still at school in Teignmouth, Devon, played his first gig at fourteen in a band called Retrospect, and was performing regularly by sixteen. He worked as a duo with Paul Downes from 1974, was a key member of Johnny Coppin's band, toured with Mike Oldfield in 1979 and played in The Albion Band from 1984 to 1991 before Show of Hands became a full-time partnership. His session work includes The Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels and Steve Harley's Poetic Justice, and in 2015 the University of Plymouth awarded him an honorary doctorate of music.
