About
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, widely known as OMD, are an English electronic band formed in Meols, Merseyside, in 1978 by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. Pioneers of British synth-pop, they paired cool electronic textures with unusually emotive melodies, from the 1980 anti-war single 'Enola Gay' to the American hit 'If You Leave'. Their 1981 album Architecture & Morality became their commercial peak, and the band has reported global sales of around 40 million records across fourteen UK top-20 albums. Journalists have dubbed McCluskey and Humphreys the 'Lennon and McCartney of synth-pop'. On stage, McCluskey's restless, self-deprecating dancing became a trademark, and after decades of touring OMD remain a reliably energetic and enduring live draw.
