The North Carolina Symphony is an orchestra based in Raleigh with sixty-six full-time musicians, performing in Meymandi Concert Hall and occasionally alongside the Carolina Ballet and the Opera Company of North Carolina. Lamar Stringfield brought a group of volunteers together to form it in 1932, and they first played in Hill Hall at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill on 14 May that year; the original musicians were unpaid. By 1935 they had given more than 140 concerts in over fifty towns across the state. In 1943 the "Horn Tootin' Bill" made it the first orchestra to receive continuous state funding, which it still receives.
