About
Mpumi Dhlamini is a composer, pianist, vocalist and producer whose work sits where jazz, African musical traditions, contemporary composition and improvisation meet. He is not an artist who simply gets on stage and performs: everything is conceptual, and his shows are built as considered experiences in which sound, composition, improvisation and performance become part of a larger idea. On 18 September 2026 — his birthday — Untitled Basement presents Total Eclipse: The First Hearing, the first public performance of newly composed works that have not yet been recorded, as he begins the Total Eclipse album series. He leads a five-piece ensemble for it, on piano and vocals with Sibusiso "Phura" Sibanyoni on electric bass, Michael Nkuna on trumpet, Kagiso Ramela on alto saxophone and Siniwe Mabaso on drums.
