Moktar is a DJ and producer, real name Moktar Sharouny, born in Cairo and raised in the Sutherland Shire south of Sydney, Australia. He fuses club music and techno with traditional Arabic instrumentation and sampling, foregrounding his Egyptian-Australian heritage; the son of Egyptian conductor Emad el Sharouny, he spent nearly a decade playing guitar in a chillwave duo before turning to dance music. He first drew attention through Mall Grab's Steel City Dance Discs in 2021 with an EP blending broken techno, house and electro with SWANA sounds, followed by the 2022 EP 'Immigrant' exploring his upbringing. Profiled by DJ Mag and Mixmag, he has become a distinctive voice in Australia's club scene, known for sets that weave Middle Eastern percussion into contemporary dance music.
