About
Melbourne Ska Orchestra are a large Australian ska ensemble formed in Melbourne in 2003 by musician Nicky Bomba and radio presenter Mohair Slim. Bomba leads a rotating cast that can swell to around 34 players, drawing on Jamaican ska, big-band swing, UK Two Tone and reggae. Their self-titled 2013 debut earned ARIA nominations, and both Sierra Kilo Alpha (2016) and One Year of Ska (2019) — the latter compiling 52 weekly singles — won the ARIA Award for Best World Music Album. They have also collected several Music Victoria awards. Built for the stage, the orchestra has toured internationally and played festivals including Glastonbury and the Montreal Jazz Festival, where their brass-heavy, high-energy sets thrive before huge crowds.
