Maria Schneider is an American composer and jazz orchestra leader, born in Windom, Minnesota in 1960. She studied theory and composition at the University of Minnesota, took a master's at the Eastman School of Music in 1985 and spent a year at the University of Miami, then was hired by Gil Evans as his copyist and assistant, working with him on music for a Sting tour and on the score for The Color of Money. An NEA apprenticeship grant let her study with Bob Brookmeyer. She formed the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra in 1992; it played weekly at Visiones in Greenwich Village from 1993 until the club closed in 1998. She has won multiple Grammy Awards.
