Man or Astro-Man? are an American instrumental band formed in Auburn, Alabama, in the early 1990s, splicing 1960s surf rock with punk, new wave and electronic elements. In keeping with their concept, the members perform under aliases such as Star Crunch, Birdstuff and Coco the Electronic Monkey Wizard, and have long claimed to be extraterrestrials sent to Earth to play surf music. Their catalogue includes Is It… Man or Astroman?, Destroy All Astromen! and A Spectrum of Infinite Scale. The band is best known for a wildly theatrical live show, with space-age jumpsuits, elaborate set pieces, theremins, Tesla coils and samples lifted from obscure science-fiction films — a sci-fi spectacle that has made them a cult favourite on stage.
