Luke Haines is an English alternative-rock musician, songwriter and author, born in 1967 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. He first drew notice fronting The Auteurs, whose 1993 debut New Wave earned a Mercury Prize nomination, and later co-founded Black Box Recorder, whose single 'The Facts of Life' became their biggest hit. A famously acerbic figure often associated with, and scornful of, Britpop, he has released a long run of solo albums since 2001, including The Oliver Twist Manifesto, and collaborated with R.E.M.'s Peter Buck on Beat Poetry for Survivalists. He is also a published author, whose memoir Bad Vibes chronicles the era. On stage he performs as a wry, idiosyncratic songwriter.
