About
Life Without Buildings are a Scottish indie rock band formed in Glasgow in the summer of 1999 and named after a track by the English new wave group Japan. Most of them were former Glasgow School of Art students: Will Bradley on drums, Chris Evans on bass and Robert Johnston on guitar, with the painter Sue Tompkins joining later that year on vocals. Johnston, Bradley and Evans wrote the music while Tompkins wrote the words, and her talk-sung delivery became the band's best-known attribute. After their first London gig the Rough Trade-affiliated Tugboat label asked them for a single. They released one album, Any Other City, in 2001, split in 2002, and announced a reunion in January 2026.
