L'Rain is the recording project of Taja Cheek, an American multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer from Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Her music resists easy filing, folding soul, gospel, psychedelia, tape collage and musique concrète into what she calls 'approaching songness.' She has released four albums — the self-titled L'Rain (2017), Fatigue (2021), I Killed Your Dog (2023) and Fata Morgana (2026) — earning wide critical acclaim; Fatigue was named album of the year by The Wire, while I Killed Your Dog landed on best-of lists at The New York Times, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. Cheek also works as a curator, has held roles at MoMA PS1 and the High Line, and in 2024 became artistic director of Performance Space New York. Her live shows lean into that restless, layered experimentation.
