Kevin Jerome Gilyard, who records as Kevin Gates, was born on 5 February 1986 to a Puerto Rican mother and a Moroccan father, and took his family name from his mother's side. The family moved to New Orleans before settling in Baton Rouge. He built his following on mixtapes — Stranger Than Fiction, By Any Means and Luca Brasi 2 all reached the top forty of the Billboard 200 — before his debut studio album, Islah, came out in January 2016 and peaked at number two. He is signed to Bread Winners' Association in partnership with Atlantic Records.
