Karnivool are an Australian rock band formed in Perth in 1998, having grown out of a high-school covers group before committing fully to original material. Fusing progressive and alternative metal with intricate time signatures and downtuned riffs, they built a devoted following through word of mouth and file-sharing. Their second album, Sound Awake (2009), debuted at number two on the ARIA chart and went gold, while 2013's Asymmetry entered at number one and won the ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album. The band has collected seventeen Western Australian Music Industry Awards and drew a crowd of around 10,000 at a 2010 Mumbai show. Known for immersive, tightly played sets, Karnivool have toured Australia, the US, the UK and Europe to repeated sold-out shows.
