James Edward Olliges Jr., who records as Jim James and sometimes as Yim Yames, is the vocalist, guitarist, producer and principal songwriter of My Morning Jacket, and has released several solo albums alongside it. He was raised in Louisville, Kentucky, went to St. Martha Grade School and graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1996, spent a short time at the University of Kentucky, and sang and played guitar in Louisville bands including Hotel Roy and Month of Sundays before My Morning Jacket. He typically plays rhythm and acoustic guitar, and Esquire named him best songwriter at its 2006 Esky Music Awards.
